SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC v. REAL SALT LAKE

Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Green. The Salt Lake come down from their mountain perch and rarefied air, to play at sea-level. For a change. We haven’t forgotten the 2:0 defeat. We have a warm welcome waiting for you lot. Cheers.

What: MLS League match Seattle Sounders FC v. Real Salt Lake.

Where: Royal Brougham Park, Occidental Avenue, Seattle, Washington.

When: 7:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Wednesday 29 May 2024 CE.

At Stake: Sounders are currently in 18th place in the league table on 17 points, 17 points adrift of leaders Inter Miami. With a victory midweek over the Salt Lake, we could reach as high as 14th place. In order for this to happen Kansas City (v.VAN) must win, and Houston (v.COL), Philadelphia (v.TOR) and DC (@MTL) must do no better than draw. Should we be defeated Wednesday night, we could sink as far as 22nd place. Aside from the ups and downs table maths, the Salt Lake are 3rd place in the league, so it’s a benchmark game to assess our current level of competitive quality. That is the most important factor currently.

Where to Watch: MLS Season Pass via Apple TV. Remember that you have the option of selecting the KJR radio simulcast as alternate audio for home matches. This setting can be changed using the control layer of the stream.

Where to Listen: 93.3 KJR FM and El Rey 1360 AM.

Real Salt Lake. I am so sick of losing to this lot. That said, imagine how much the Gaffer and the lads hate losing to them.  And just the name of their club - the idea of royalty in Utah, I mean…aside from the Osmond family, it’s just absurd! And their kits that look like they were designed by children during a finger-painting session. So much to dislike.

All pettiness aside. This club are extremely difficult to beat. However, I come bearing good tidings. We have more than enough talent to beat that lot. One of the ways we improve our chances at victory, is our incomparable support. The best fucking support in the league. And I expect it be loud. Sooooooo loud. Is it out of the question to try and trip the local seismic instruments again? I think it’s time for a warm welcome for the Salt Lake…to Green Hell.

If you can make it to the ground, link up with your mates and definitely do that. Failing this, you know the drill. Pubs and dwellings for stories and tellings. Houses and flats for pints and cats. Boats and ships for pie and chips. Positive psychic energy only for our Boys in Green.

It’s midweek football, under the lights at Royal Brougham Park. GO ON YOU SOUNDERS!! GET IN!!

Before kick-off, please join me in the auld toast: “TO THE SEATTLE SOUNDERS FOOTBALL CLUB…AND VICTORY!!!”

Today Sounders FC will honour Sounders and United States defender,

Jimmy McAlister, the Sounders 1977 NASL Rookie of the Year. Good on ye, Jimmy!

The Good News

Sounders FC are 5-2-1 in our last eight matches in all competitions. It’s difficult to argue with positive results. In particular, Rusnak’s slide-rule through-ball to Morris was encouraging as it’s the one of the few goals we’ve created from the run of play. If we can do more of that, it’s going to be a lot more difficult for the opposition defence to handle us.

Sounders FC have only been defeated once at home this season (1-4-1). The Sounders’ defence is tied for 6th best in the league.

For once, we were allowed a three day turnaround before the midweek fixture. That should be just enough time for physical recovery if training is light.

Josh Atencio has been pronounced fit and is available for selection. I’d expect to see him as a sub. A sensible thing to do would be to use Josh to replace Cristian who has seen heavy usage these last 11 days.

Pedro de la Vega is a matchday decision, but at least that’s better than no chance of being able to play. We’ll see him as a substitute if he passes a late fitness test. The sooner de la Vega returns to full fitness, the better it will be for both Pedro and the club.

Sounders are 12-2-5 all-time in the league when RSL comes to visit. I like those odds.

The Bad News

In the last three matches, Sounders FC have had five shots on goal…total. That’s an average of 1.67 shots on frame per match. This number is way, way too low. If we go back as far as Portland (5 shots on goal) and LA Galaxy (5 shots on goal) we were doing a bit better in this regard. If we’re going to challenge the best teams in the league, this has to improve.

It’s been a tonne of matches in way too short a time. Three matches in eight days. Who’s fit to responsibly run-out for Wednesday? Sure there have been three turnaround days between the St. Louis game and Wednesday, but a few of our players, specifically Ragen, Cristian, and Alex, have seen heavy usage over the past eight days. Is it responsible to play them? Counterpoint: How could you justify not playing them against the 3rd placed team in the league?

Salt Lake haven’t lost since 8 May when New Mexico United put them out of the US Open Cup, and haven’t lost in the league since 9 March, when they lost to Colorado at Sandy. In the league, Salt Lake are unbeaten in their last 11 matches (7-4-0).

Salt Lake are the statistically more likely team to score two goals, as they literally average two goals a match, and are second in the league in goal scoring with 30 goals. The Sounders sit at 12th best in goal scoring, having hit 18 this season.

Salt Lake are even defending better than we are, albeit by the thinnest of margins (0.07 less goals conceded/match).

The danger men for Salt Lake are Arango (13 goals) and Carlos Andres Gomez (7 goals). Julio and Luna have hit three goals apiece. Arango also has eight assists, Luna has seven, Carlos Andres Gomez has four, and Crooks has four. So many of the club’s primary attackers, can damage you with a killer pass, as well as scoring goals.

Ruidiaz leads the Sounders with seven goals. Morris is next with three. No other Sounder has more than one goal.

Rusnak has five assists to lead the Sounders this season. Cristian is second with three assists. Ruidiaz and Vargas have two assists each. This is decent, but the creativity must improve in attack. We can only score so many goals from set pieces, penalties, and fortuitous bounces in the Penalty Area.

The Side I Would Select

Despite heavy usage, my selection is probably going to mirror the Gaffers. What would be different is how I would use substitutions. Alex, Cristian, and Ragen should probably get subbed sometime between half-time and the hour mark - regardless of the score.

Rationale: The gamble of using primariliy squad players and Sounders FC Reserves players in the midweek cup-tie paid off. Thus most of the first-choice players should be fit to play 70-90 minutes. Nouhou is an easy selection, he was suspended last match and has had that additional time to rest. Vargas, Gomez Andrade, Morris, Rusnak, and Joao Paulo played zero minutes midweek. They should be good to go on the three-day turnaround. The only questions are Alex, Cristian, and Ragen. They have seen a tonne of usage over the last 11 days. Is the three-day turnaround enough time for physical and chemical recovery? I’d sub all three somewhere between half-time and the 60th minute.

The Side I Think The Gaffer Will Select

No reason why the first-choice players can’t play in this one. The only question is how to use substitutes and mind usage to prevent injury.

ST. LOUIS CITY SC v. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC

Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Green. Are you looking for some good barbecue, a chance to gawk at the Gateway Arch, and a chance to see the wages of some of the worst state policy in America? Boy are you in for a treat, as the Sounders FC head to Citypark to face St. Louis City on a Saturday night.

What: MLS league match, St. Louis City SC v. Seattle Sounders FC.

Where: Citypark, Market Street, St. Louis, Missouri.

When: 5:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Saturday 25 May 2024 CE.

At Stake: The club will see this as a must-win match as Sounders trail St. Louis who are currently in the last MLS Cup western qualification berth with our Boys in Green two points adrift. It really is far too early to be talking about such things though, with only a bit more than a third of the season played. The larger reality is that it’s possible for Sounders to ascend as high as 17th place in the league table. For this scenario to come to fruition Sounders must win, Nashville (@MTL) and Orlando (v.CLB) can do no better than a draw, and DC United (v.CHI) must be defeated. Should Sounders be defeated, we could drop as low as 25th. Sounders FC are currently in 21st place in the league table, 17 points adrift of Inter Miami.

Where to Watch: MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.

Where to Listen: 93.3 KJR FM and El Rey 1360 AM.

Support, as always, is vital. If you can get to Citypark, link up with your ECS and Sub-group people. For us here in the Evergreen it’s all about watching on the telly, hope, and belief. We must will the lads on to victory. It’s what we do. It’s in our bones. Although from time to time there may be despair, there is no quit amongst our numbers. Positive psychic energy must be beamed all the way to the middle of the country.

Best strap in. It’s Sounders football, under the lights on the hostile ground of Citypark. UP THE SOUNDERS FC!

Before kick-off, please join me in the auld toast: “TO THE SEATTLE SOUNDERS FOOTBALL CLUB…AND VICTORY!!!”

The Good News

We’re getting results of late. That can’t be argued. In the league and also, I’m pleased to report, in the US Open Cup. Sounders are 2-2-1 in their last five in the league, 4-2-1 in their last seven in all competitions. It seems we might be turning the corner, leaving behind an extremely patchy start.

Raul Ruidiaz seven goals in the league are cause for celebration. We’ve been fortunate that Raul has remained healthy, and has played in 13 of our 14 league matches, and was in the team 11 of those 13 matches.

Credit to the Gaffer for selecting Nouhou, Cristian, and Jon Bell in the team for the USOC midweek. It was a solid team, and also Kossa-Rienzi was a shrewd selection and got to do a star turn with that highlight-reel goal. It was a stronger team than I thought we’d see, mostly comprised of Sounders FC squad players - but seeing Bell, Cristian, and Nouhou in the team was a good sign. I didn’t think it would be enough - I’m glad I was proven wrong in that instance. I know I often criticise the Manager’s match selection and both the context and timing of his substitutions, but I’ll grant we’re getting more positive results than not…for now. As long as the side is thriving, I am content.

The Sounders defence continues to hold, tied for 6th place in the league in goals conceded.

St. Louis are the statistically more likely team to concede two goals.

St. Louis are experiencing a crisis of form after dropping their last two matches (LAFC and @CIN) by a combined score of 5:1. Before that St. Louis had only one loss in 11 matches.

The Bad News

Our recent return to winning ways is the hickory veneer on the clapboard of reality. In the league, we have been shut-out in six of 14 matches. That’s being shut-out in nearly half our league matches. In the Cup, we are getting results, sensational and exciting ones at that, but both those matches we were one bad break away from defeat.

Apart from Raul Ruidiaz seven goals, Jordan Morris has two, and no other Sounder has more than one. Sounders FC are 12th in the league in goal scoring.

Nouhou is out this match as he must serve a one-match ban for being sent-off against Vancouver on 18 May. He was eligible for the US Open Cup match because disciplinary cards from league matches do not apply to matches in other tournaments.

St. Louis are the statistically more likely team to score two goals.

St. Louis has only lost one time at Citypark this season (3-3-1). Sounders FC have only two away victories in eight matches (2-1-5).

St. Louis is not participating in the US Open Cup, the cowardly wankers that they are, and thus have had a full six-day turnaround, as opposed to the Sounders FC who had a match midweek.

What a goal from this lad midweek, yeh? What a bright future he has with us. (photo credit: pac-12.com)

The Side I Would Select

Anyone that didn’t play 60 or more minutes midweek should be able to play at St. Louis, barring a late injury in training.

Rationale: Wouldn’t play Cristian after 61 minutes midweek on two-day turnaround. No sense in risking injury. Maybe as a sub, or sub him off at half-time, but you’d want him to play reduced minutes on so little rest. It’s just responsible to have Vargas in that holding role instead. I’d have de la Vega at right-forward, the sooner we get him integrated the better. Obviously, if Pedro is still hurt or not 100% he should sit out this match. Everyone else in place as you would normally expect. Likely they can go again in four days time for the return match against the Salt Lake at Royal Brougham Park.

The Side I Think The Gaffer Will Select

I’d say Brian goes the full bore. No reason not to, as there should be enough recovery time before the Salt Lake match. He said in the presser that the Roldan brothers are durable and play well on short rest, so I’d expect to see both of them. In general, expect the most experienced selection humanly possible. Look for de la Vega to come on somewhere around the 70 minute mark, perhaps for Cristian as he went 90 minute midweek in the Cup, with Vargas dropping back a line to hold.
