MINNESOTA UNITED FC v. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC - MLS CUP - ROUND OF 16 - GAME 1 - SIMPSON STREET, ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA

Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Green. MLS Cup begins for us in St. Paul where Minnesota United await us in the land of 10,000 lakes.

What: MLS Cup Round of 16, Game 1, Minnesota United FC v. Seattle Sounders FC.

Where: Simpson Street, St. Paul, Minnesota.

When: 6 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Monday 27 October 2025 CE.

At Stake: In the best-of-three nonsense we’re about to witness, Sounders FC will need to win the first match of the tie at Simpson Street to take away the Loons’ home advantage. It should be noted at this time that aggregate goals will not decide the cup tie, and that there will be no extra-time should both teams be level at full-time. Instead the match will go straight to penalty-kicks. Because stupid.

Where to Watch: MLS Season Pass via Apple TV, Fox Sports 1, and Fox Deportes.

Where to Listen: KJR via iHeartMedia Seattle and El Rey 1360 AM.

The MLS Cup begins for our Boys in Green on Monday night in St. Paul. The Loons won both matches against us in the league and that feels intolerable. That’s because it IS intolerable. Sounders FC, bolstered by a decent four match unbeaten run at the end of the league season, look to up their game against a stubborn Minnesota side that we can’t seem to put away.

If you’re headed to the match, look after each other and tie your scarves proper. Behave yourselves until you get to the ground. Then make the most ungodly amount of noise possible so we can hear you on the telly. We are not favoured to win MLS Cup, but the rest of the league underestimating us is kind of just par for the course. Win or lose, you will hear us, Minnesota.

It’s MLS Cup football under the Monday night lights at Simpson Street. GO ON YOU SOUNDERS!!! GET IN!!!

Before kick-off, please join me in the auld toast: “TO THE SEATTLE SOUNDERS FOOTBALL CLUB…AND VICTORY!!!”

With Gomez Andrade’s return to fitness, will we see him in the team

or coming off the bench on Monday night? (photo credit: unosantafe.com.ar)

The Good News

Looks like the Loons saw fit to sell their best goal scorer, Oluwaseyi, to Villarreal for €8M. One less dangerous goal scorer to mark.

Loons are 1-1-3 in their last five matches. Sounders FC are unbeaten in their last four and 3-1-1 in their last five. So we’ve got the edge on form which is good.

Gomez Andrade has returned to fitness. Kim and Kent have been upgraded from injured to matchday decisions. The Gaffer stated in Sunday’s press conference that Kent “…will be involved in the game” and “…looks really good.” Always good to get reinforced at this late stage.

We have a strong attack led by Danny Musovski (14 goals, 4 assists), Albert Rusnak (11 goals, 10 assists), and a revitalised Jordan Morris (5 goals, 2 assists). Add to that Paul Rothrock and Jesus Ferreira (4 goals, 7 assists each), with playmaking aided by Cristian Roldan (1 goal, 9 assists). All goal contributions listed here are from league play only.

The Bad News

De la Vega (broken patella) is lost for the season and underwent successful knee surgery last Tuesday. We’ve lost a bit of class and quality that can’t truly be replaced. Mend soon, Pedro.

I think that there is a high probability that Sounders centre-forward Danny Musovski will start every match in this tie on the bench, despite being the top scorer and most reliable finisher in the squad this season. Provided this is the case, you’d have to question that choice.

Although Sounders don’t have a horrible away record, it’s not great, with only seven victories in 20 matches (7-4-9) in all competitions.

Although Oluwaseyi has flown the nest, Minnesota still has a balanced and formidable attack led by Markanich and Yeboah (9 goals each). Pereyra (6 goals, 11 assists) can hurt you with a goal or a killer pass, as can Finnish international Robin Lod (5 goals, 6 assists). They combine this with the 3rd best defence in MLS, having conceded only 39 league goals. They were also US Open Cup Semi-Finalists.

The Loons are a tough away day, as they have an 11-4-7 record at their Simpson Street ground in all competitions.

We haven’t found a way to defeat the Loons this season, which is troubling.

Both teams score at about the same rate (difference of 0.04 goals/match) and concede goals at about the same rate (difference of 0.12 goals conceded/match) in all competitions. So by the numbers, it’s a crapshoot. As it often is in MLS.

The Side I Would Select

The window to rest players is now gone. So in cup football, we go with our best, come what may. Musovski has 14 league goals and should rightfully be at centre-forward, so for me Morris goes back to his left-forward position that he is perhaps better suited to. However, this leaves Rothrock on the substitutes bench, which I don’t like, but it doesn’t make sense to have him on at the expense of Ferreira or Morris.

The Side I Think The Gaffer Will Select

I’d be shocked if this wasn’t the selection. The Gaffer prefers Morris at centre-forward. Criminal that Musovski and his 14 league goals are likely to be firmly planted on the bench.

Intangibles

Officiating.

The Referee for game one of the MLS Cup Round of 16 cup tie will be Alexis da Silva.

MIN record with da Silva as Ref: 0-1-1

SEA record with da Silva as Ref: 1-2-0

Da Silva has refereed 70 matches in his career, 40 matches in MLS, none in MLS Cup.

Ramsay Effect.

Minnesota United Manager Eric Ramsay (Swansea City, Shrewsbury Town, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Wales) has the more prestigious resume compared to our Gaffer, and became the youngest coach to earn a UEFA Pro License. That said, Sounders have dominated Minnesota United in league play with an all-time record of 12-2-3. Sounders are 4-2-2 when playing the Loons at St. Paul. However, most of those matches were with Adrien Heath in charge (Burnley, Sheffield United, Coventry City, Austin Aztex, and Orlando City). It sets up an irresistible force versus immoveable object type of matchup. It’s gonna be a cracker.

NEW YORK CITY FC v. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC

“If we shadows have offended,

Think but this, and all is mended,

That you have but slumber’d here

While these visions did appear.

And this weak and idle theme,

No more yielding but a dream,

Gentles, do not reprehend:

if you pardon, we will mend:

And, as I am an honest Puck,

If we have unearned luck

Now to ‘scape the serpent’s tongue,

We will make amends ere long;

Else the Puck a liar call;

So, good night unto you all.

Give me your hands, if we be friends,

And Robin shall restore amends”

– William Shakespeare

Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Green. Manchester Citeh, Junior Varsity. I mean, that’s all I really need to say. Sounders FC make the trans-continental voyage for a Saturday night matchup in Queens in the final match of the league schedule.

What: MLS league match, New York City FC v. Seattle Sounders FC

Where: Seaver Way, Flushing, Queens, New York.

When: 3:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Saturday 18 October 2025 CE.

At Stake: MLS Cup seeding is locked for us at the W5 position. Sounders are currently 13th in the MLS league table on 52 points, 14 points adrift of MLS League Champions Philadelphia. It is possible for Sounders to finish as high as 10th in the league, but it would require a Sounders victory over NYC FC, along with Miami winning at Nashville, Orlando managing no better than a draw at Toronto, and Chicago managing no better than a draw at New England. However, the truth is that this game really doesn’t matter at all. Their Leagues Cup victory cemented Sounders’ place in the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 for next season. Soooooo, that’s it then as the difference between a 10th place MLS finish and a 13th place MLS finish is nearly meaningless. Should Sounders be defeated in Queens, and Columbus defeat the Red Donkeys we would fall to 14th place. This also would not really make a meaningful difference. Should one of our key players be severely injured on Saturday, from overuse, that would make a massive difference for the worse.

Where to Watch: MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.

Where to Listen: KJR 950 AM and El Rey 1360 AM.

The MLS season ends on the road in Queens. Those making the trip, look after each other and tie your scarves proper. The 7 train from Times Square, Grand Central Terminal, or Queensboro Plaza gets you to Seaver Way. Those here in The Evergreen, try and link up with your mates. It’s pubs and dwellings for stories and tellings. Houses and flats for pints and cats. Sometimes boats and ships for pie and chips. We play this one, and it’s on to MLS Cup.

It’s MLS league football, under the setting sun at Seaver Way. GO ON YOU SOUNDERS!!! GET IN!!!

Before kick-off, please join me in the auld toast: “TO THE SEATTLE SOUNDERS FOOTBALL CLUB…AND VICTORY!!!”

Sounders FC forward, Jordan Morris is the club’s all-time leading

goal scorer with 88 goals in all competitions.

The Good News

All in all it’s been a reasonably successful season already. A Leagues Cup title for silverware in the bank, sorted. Qualification for CONCACAF, cemented. We have decent seeding for MLS Cup. And we held our own against some incredibly steep opposition in Club World Cup and didna look out of place in the doing of it.

We’ve got all our international players back, mostly none the worse for the wear.

We’ve won two in a row and conceded zero goals in our last two matches.

NYC FC are hardly invincible at home (12-0-7, including two matches played in Harrison, NJ in Leagues Cup). So that’s us in with a shout.

Our attacking play is tied for 9th best in the league. Although it’s a bit top heavy with Musovski (14 league goals) and Rusnak (11 goals) doing the heavy lifting, Rothrock, de la Vega, Ferreira, and Morris have all hit four goals. So our attack can be very unpredictable in where the goals are coming from. This is a strength for us. We also have four excellent playmakers in Rusnak (9 assists), Cristian (9 assists), Rothrock (7 assists), and Ferreira (7 assists) providing quality in the final third.

We are the team more likely to score two goals as we are currently averaging 1.76 goals/match in all competitions, compared to NYC FC’s 1.41 goals/match.

The Bad News

The danger men for NYC FC are: Maxi Morales (2 goals, 11 assists) who can break you with his passing game, Hannes Wolf (11 goals, 7 assists) who can hurt you either way, and Alonso Martinez who is a cracking good finisher (17 goals).

The two teams play defence at nearly the same level, with Sounders conceding 1.35 goals/match in all competitions and NYC FC conceding at a rate of 1.30 goals per match in all competitions. This makes things a bit more of a standoff, especially given that NYC FC will have the advantage of their home crowd.

Sounders have not been good on the road this season (6-4-9). It would be bad if we stumbled early on come Saturday.

NYC FC were better against Atlanta, Columbus, and Minnesota this season earning victories against them, a feat we could not replicate.

Sounders have eight players who have played 2000+ minutes this season. At the top of the list is Cristian Roldan with 2633 minutes, with Albert Rusnak in the eighth place with 2060 minutes. These totals do not include CONCACAF, Leagues Cup or Club World Cup minutes. Minoungou, Leyva, Baker-Whiting, Brunell, De Rosario, Hawkins, Baker, and Sousa all played less than 750 minutes in the league, with Minoungou playing 713 minutes and Travian Sousa at the bottom of that list with 0 minutes. That’s right, 0 minutes. This second group had no serious injuries that I know of, and they were available for selection every week as far as I know. It’s fucking mental is what it is, and sometimes I am convinced our successes as a club are not because of the way our Manager handles player workload, but in spite of it.

The Side I Would Select

We cannot advance our seeding in MLS Cup any higher; it is not mathematically possible to do so. We are 13th in the league table and the best finish we could possibly manage is 10th. The difference between 10th and 13th in the league is nearly meaningless. Time for developmental minutes for youngers and seldom-used squad players. Time to rest nicked up and overworked players. Time to see what we have in the cupboard for the future, as the core of our team is ageing.
