What: MLS league fixture, Seattle Sounders FC v. Sporting Kansas City.

Where: Royal Brougham Park, Occidental Avenue, Seattle, Washington.

When: 4:15 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Sunday 15 September 2024 CE.

At Stake: MLS Cup seeding. Seriously. That’s it. You could add in pride, a bit of comeuppance for our 2:1 defeat at State Avenue in June.

Where to Watch: Apple TV and Fox Sports 1. As it’s a home match, alternate audio commentary from KJR is available in the control layer if you’re watching on Apple TV. So if Max Bretos and former Dallas Burn defender Brian Dunseth aren’t your cup of tea, you can do something about it.

It would be a lovely thing to see the lads square things with these, after the defeat in June. Also, as we get closer to the season’s end, each match is a preparation for MLS Cup. If you’re a supporter and you have the time and the means, do get yourselves to the ground and round up your mates whilst you’re at it. If that’s not possible, you know the drill. I mean, do I even have to say it?  Kansas City are currently in 23rd place in the MLS league table.

Our last victory against Kansas City was a 4:1 thumping on 25 March 2023 at State Avenue.

The Good News

Sounders FC have done a whole lot more winning than losing of late. After the training match last Sat, Sunday’s fixture could be just the tonic we need to work ourselves into Cup mode.

The squad are healthy nearly to a man, with Frei cleared to play, though Joao Paulo is still out with his calf issue. Leo Chu is fighting through a knee issue and is a matchday decision. So plenty of talent for the Gaffer to choose from.

Sounders have a 11-5-4 record at home in all competitions, whereas Kansas City’s away form is brutal as evidenced by their 3-3-10 mark.

Although Kansas City score marginally more goals than we do (1.66 goals/match : 1.54 goals/match), Sounders FC are tied for fourth best defence in the league. Defence has been an issue for Kansas City this season, as they are conceding the better part of two goals per match (1.77 goals conceded/match).

The Bad News

In their last eight league matches, Kansas City have only lost twice (4-2-2).

Should they all play, Salloi (2 goals, 3 assists), Pulido (5 goals, 5 assists), and Russell (4 goals, 5 assists) can be a handful, and with William Agada leading the line (9 goals, 2 assists), our defence has its work cut out.

Sounders FC have been shut out 10 times in all competitions. I know we hit four goals in Columbus last Sat, but I doubt Tim Melia will be as generous between the sticks as the Crew’s emergency goalkeeper Sean Zawadski, who had been playing at right-centre-half before he was required to deputise for the sent-off Abraham Romero. It is also possible that Melia will rugby-tackle one of our players as he did to Cristian, some time ago. Without penalty.

I believe the last three matches of the season should be used as preparation for MLS Cup, and also to try to salvage our run at the Cascadia Cup. With that said, I think the Kansas City, San Jose, and Houston matches should be used to rest our weary first-team and see which of our youngers are ready to play a larger role at the club, and which need to go out on loan to get some first-team football under their belts. This is not going to happen though; the Gaffer will attempt to clench and white-knuckle every point in the standings with a vise-grip. I think, especially in light of the club’s reluctance to purchase top young players, development needs to be the focus, as there is only MLS Cup and Cascadia to play for. Let’s hope this opportunity is not squandered.

The Side I Would Select

The squad is well-rested. However, we have a midweek fixture against San Jose three days after the Kansas City match, which is a two-day turn.

Rationale: Frei has been cleared to play, but a bit of extra rest for that knock on the head would do him good. Pedro needs matches, badly. I like the idea of Georgi at right-forward; let's see how he does and if it’s not working out, Rothrock can spell him after half-time.

Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Green. Sounders travel to the Hunt Way ground to face Leagues Cup champions Columbus Crew in a battle of stagger– scratch that. It’s a battle of who is least shorthanded from the current slate of international fixtures. MLS football, catch the magic.

What: MLS league match, Columbus Crew SC v. Seattle Sounders FC.

Where: Hunt Way, Columbus, Ohio.

When: 4:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Saturday 7 September, 2024 CE.

At Stake: Seeding for MLS Cup and not much else. If you’ve got a really long memory, a bit of revenge for Columbus beating us in the 2020 MLS Cup Final.

Where to Watch: MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.

This promises to be a difficult away match. These are the times when support is the most vital. Gather your mates out there in the Heartland, and in Ohio proper, and turn up in what we hope will be a robust away presence at Hunt Way.

Regardless of the league being out of reach to win, we support the lads as best as we can no matter what, come what may.

Sure, Columbus has a spanking new football ground that they don’t have to share with an NFL team, amazing coaching, quality players (many of whom are quite young and have many good footballing years left in them), a shiny if somewhat beat-to-shit, bent-up trophy they’ve just won, and have four trophies to our one in the last five seasons………

But fuck all that to pieces, our lot are going to Ohio to try and take three points off these gits and make their big salty tears sweeten up our biscuits. That’s the end of it.

Faced with the reality of losing Raul, and the looming possibility of losing Joao Paulo and Rusnak

in the off-season, it looks like uncharted waters ahead for Sounders FC.

The Good News

Per Rave Green TV: Columbus players “Cucho” Hernandez, Amundsen, Hagen, Schulte, Moreira, Russel-Rowe, and Farsi will not be available for selection this match. For this we can be grateful.

Columbus have had an astonishing level of success this season, winning the Leagues Cup, currently sitting 4th place in the MLS league table, and were runners-up to Pachuca in the CONCACAF Champions [insert word of choice here, and then claim your club were the first to win it…in the “modern era”]. This success is statistically mitigated though, in that nearly half their team is unavailable for this match through national team selection or suspension. That’s a big break for Sounders FC, because Columbus haven’t lost a match since July 20th and have compiled a record of 6-1-0 in all competitions from 28 August to now. In fact, Columbus has only lost five times this season in all competitions, compiling an overall record of 21-11-5.

At press, the only injured player for us was Stefan Frei, who has yet to clear concussion protocol. The rest of the squad is healthy, though we are missing Vargas and Nouhou due to national team commitments. All in all, we’ve got a squad that has a decent chance to get a result at Hunt Way on Saturday.

With the league championship out of reach and only MLS Cup to play for, the silver lining is that these last fixtures are an excellent chance to see how good some of our youth players are that are waiting in the wings. Players have to play at the highest level in competitive matches to develop. We should perhaps see to that.

The Bad News

Raul has announced he isn’t coming back when his contract expires at the end of this season. It is understandable, though, that he might want to finish his career at Universitario in Peru, where his footballing journey began.

Joao Paulo and Rusnak will be out of contract at season’s end. I can’t help but wonder if we’ll be able to retain them. If both players leave Longacres, who will replace them?

Nouhou and Vargas will be unavailable for selection, as they have been called up by the Cameroon and Mexico U-23s. Vargas and Nouhou are mainstays in the team for Sounders, and their absences will be keenly felt. Can their understudies play up and seize the day?

If Columbus without half their first-choice players is just as good as with them, Saturday’s match could become a very long afternoon indeed for Sounders FC.

The Side I Would Select

Stef’s in concussion protocol currently. Nouhou and Vargas are with Cameroon and Mexico U-23s. That’s a chunk of quality that will be unavailable to us for our trip to Hunt Way. This makes an already difficult task even harder. Silver lining: We have an opportunity to see what we have in the cupboard against one of the elite teams in the league.

Rationale: Thomas is most likely to start between the sticks, though I’d like to see young Jacob Castro in a meaningful and challenging match. Baker-Whiting for the absent Nouhou, although Baker could also play in this role. Cristian is a #6, not a forward. With Vargas called into Mexico U-23s, it’s even more important that Cristian provide cover for the defence. De La Vega needs to get as many matches as possible.

There are other possibilities, sure. But this seems like a good prediction. It’s also possible that Schmetzer goes to a back-five against a superior opponent, something like a 5-2-2-1. Also possible De La Vega is in the team instead of Rothrock. Pedro is a big-ticket player and needs to integrate into the team now that he’s fully fit.
