SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC v. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC

Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Green. Vancouver Whitecaps make the trip south to The Evergreen, as both clubs return to league play after crashing out of Leagues Cup.

What: MLS league match and Cascadia Cup tie, Seattle Sounders FC v. Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Where: Royal Brougham Park, Occidental Avenue, Seattle, Washington.

When: 7:30 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Sunday 16 August 2026 CE.

At Stake: Well, after a tough elimination at the hands of Tigres in CONCACAF, a disappointing Leagues Cup campaign, and losing six straight in the league for the first time in the MLS-era, pretty much all that’s left for us to compete for is MLS Cup qualification. In terms of Cascadia Cup, we would have to defeat Vancouver in both league matches to even attempt to contest it. Sooooo, it’s possible to still win it, but it feels unlikely with the current state of affairs, given the current injury situation, the failure of the club to keep pace in the arms race for elite players, quality players having been sold off, and the struggles this season in goal scoring. I don’t enjoy writing that, but this is objectively where we are.

Where to Watch: Apple TV. You may want to use the alternate audio option in the Apple TV control layer to avoid Taylor Twellman’s whiny and often pointless colour commentary. Just sayin’.

We’re in kind of a weird area just now as a club. We had an absolutely awful stretch, and yet recent results seem to point towards improvement. Yeh, the injury problem is still plaguing us, we’ve lost Pedro for the season…again, and we couldn’t salvage much from Leagues Cup, but at least we’re showing that our youngers know how to football, which is inarguably a good thing.

A certain consolation, at least in regards to this Sunday’s matinee against Vancouver, is that the ‘Caps are also tryna figure out what the hell happened to their season as well. They too are in a tough stretch and had a worse Leagues Cup than we did.

So, based on the scenario that I’m starting to see take shape, this is going to be a rather scrappy and possibly ill-tempered affair, as both clubs are trying to escape the quicksand of mediocrity. This match is gonna be a wooly one, and you can take that to the bank.

You know the drill, Emerald Citeh. Get ye to the ground and link up with ours. Make a racket that vibrates the entire park. For those of us not in attendance, it’s pubs and dwellings for stories and tellings, houses and flats for pints and cats, and sometimes even boats and ships for pie and chips.

The Good News

‘Caps haven’t won since 8 July against Calvary in the Canadian Cup. Their last win in any other competition was at San Diego in an MLS league fixture on 23 May. Vancouver only scored 2 goals in Leagues Cup, managing only a draw and two losses. So Vancouver is a struggling side currently mired in a terrible patch of form.

You don’t like to see anyone get hurt, but Vancouver is a much less dangerous side to face without Vancouver and United States striker Brian White (10 goals), who is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue. Couple that setback with the transfer of the ‘Caps second-highest goal scorer Sebastian Berhalter (6 goals) to Middlesbrough, and you quickly see that this leaves ageing German standout Thomas Muller (5 goals) as their most dangerous attacker.

With the recent Leagues Cup victory over Queretaro, followed by a solid showing against the Chivas, Sounders appear ready to turn a corner, and with it a return to winning ways. This combined with the emergence of some of our younger players, including Sebastian Gomez, lends us a crack of daylight in a season that saw us mired in a seven-match losing streak, the worst Sounders have suffered in the MLS-era.

Primary goal threats for the Sounders will be Rothrock (7 goals in all competitions) closely followed by Rusnak (6 goals in all competitions + 5 assists in the league). Musovski (4 goals in all competitions) and Ferreira (2 goals, 5 assists) round out the Sounders attack.

The Bad News

Somehow, despite their recent poor form, Vancouver are sitting pretty at 3rd place in the league table (as of 6:00 p.m. PDT) on 34 points, 6 points adrift of leaders Nashville. The only thing keeping them there is their torrid 9-2-1 start to the 2026 MLS campaign. If they manage to reclaim that sort of form, we are in deep, deep shite. Whether they could manage a return to form with White injured and Berhalter gone is another matter entirely.

Vancouver is currently averaging the better part of two goals a match (1.85) in all competitions. Although this number doesn’t reflect the current level of attacking threat posed by the ‘Caps, it would be prudent to remember that they pumped Minnesota for six goals back in March. Only fair to point out, though, that two of those goals were hit by White, and one by Berhalter.

Pedro de la Vega just can’t get a break. The Gaffer said in a press conference that he had a significant quadriceps pull and is likely out for the season. It’s never a good thing when two of your three players on Designated Player contracts aren’t really producing and are often unavailable due to injuries. This has to be sorted. Over the last three seasons, Jordan Morris has only played 62 out of a possible 102 league matches (61%). Morris’ 13 league goals in 2024 dropped to five goals in 2025, and two goals this season so far. De la Vega has appeared in only 42 league matches out of a possible 102 (41%) since his move to Longacres in 2024. In that time, Pedro has only managed five goals and six assists earned around a long laundry list of injuries. It’s just not sustainable to continue limping on like this.

What Brian Schmetzer has referred to as an “abnormal” year for injuries, I believe has been several years in the making. You can’t run 30+ year-old players, and/or players with a long history of injuries, out match after match after match and not expect there to be a breaking point when it comes to injuries. With de la Vega it’s abnormal, because it’s highly unusual for such a young player to be so extensively hampered by injuries. As for Arriola (31), Gomez Andrade (33), and Morris (31), you could make a very persuasive argument that they’ve simply been worn to the nub from overuse. Man-management has to be a pro-active effort to prevent injury, not a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency effort in desperation.

Although Sounders attack has started to perk up a bit (4 goals in the last two matches), the current scoring average in all competitions does not reflect the recent upturn (1.33 goals/match in all competitions), and only Kansas City has scored fewer than the Sounders’ 20 league goals.

The Side I Would Select

Alex at holding midfield seems to be paying dividends, so why not keep him there. Rusnak and Musovski scoring goals against Queretaro has restored my faith a bit. Gomez is off to a bright start; let’s see if he can continue to help positively influence results. I’d run these out.
