Greetings to my brothers and sisters in Green. It’s that time again. The cash-grab of a tournament fever dream of MLS and Liga MX. Not a CONCACAF tournament. Not a FIFA tournament. Literally the “reason” we don’t contest the cup of the United States FA. Leagues Cup. The hosts: Current CONCACAF Champions Cup holders, Toluca. The vict- I mean visitors: Our beloved Sounders FC. Welcome all of those seated here today. This is your first lecture class in Football Econ 101, I hope you came prepared for class. Let’s get underway.

What: Leagues Cup phase one, Toluca v. Seattle Sounders FC.

Where: Estadio Nemesio Diez, Avenida Constituyentes, Toluca.

When: 7:00 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, Wednesday 5 August 2026 CE.

At Stake: A bent-up tin pot, likely a boatload of cash, and a chance to suffer yet more injury to our squad.

Where to Watch: Apple TV, UniMas, and Fox Sports 1.

Where to Listen: I am uncertain whether KJR and El Rey will cover this tournament. I haven’t seen any promotional evidence that either will broadcast the match. That said, if you’re counting on local radio, you could try looking at the websites of both stations.

So it’s the Leagues Cup. Love that we won it last year, structurally hate everything about it. Don’t know that we’ll properly contest it this year. Still hate everything about it.

With that out of the way, let’s address the situation at hand. Morale: Low. Injuries: Gomez Andrade, de la Vega, Cristian, and Morris are, as far as I know, all still out. Also possible that Arreola and Nouhou may have injuries as well. Outlook: Grim. Transfer news: All quiet on the Northwestern front.

Whoever lines up for us at El Bombanero midweek is gonna need everything we have to give as fans and supporters. If you can get down to the match, do that and be loud at the ground and well-behaved in town, as America’s global reputation is completely trashed even beyond it’s crap level before Baron Von Trumpenstein: The Sequel, this time it’s personal. So any repairs that can be made, make them by being decent folk and well-behaved guests. Maybe even buy a new friend an ice-cold cerveza.

Here in The Evergreen, all we can do is watch from our side of the telly screen. Like a character in a Charles Dickens novel seeing a loaf of bread from the street side of a shop window whilst not even having tuppence in your pocket to pay for it.

It’s almost not worth thinkin’ about.

The Good News

Jackson Ragen has served his two-match ban and is available for selection. Although he would’ve been available anyway, because Jackson’s suspension only applied to MLS league matches.

We scored the first goal of the match last Sat against the Treecutters. That’s not nothin’.

Though we are 0-0-6 in our last six matches, three of those were decided by only one goal. Maybe it’s not as hopeless as it looks.

We had some decent chances in the Portland match that if it weren’t for last-ditch goalkeeping from Pantemis, we might have finished them.

Maybe the high-pressure / high-visibility scenario of cup football at the home of a worthy opponent will bring out the best in our lads.

The Bad News

You look through the team sheet of Toluca’s 3:1 dismantling of Necaxa on Sunday, and the outlook for our chances seems quite grim. You see lots of players that score goals, that have won a long list of honours, and who are more highly rated on the transfer market. Toluca also has a Manager who has been working as a football manager for 23 years. I sincerely doubt that Antonio Mohamed’s last gig before becoming a manager was as the Manager of a construction company. So…there’s that.

If you think that this losing spell seems different from previous ones endured by the Sounders FC, you would be 100% correct. This is the worst spell we’ve had in the MLS-era. There was the stretch in 2015 where we lost eight out of nine (1-0-8) from 20 June through 9 August, but even in that we’d not lost six in a row.

Wilfried Nancy, the former manager of Columbus Crew, lost four consecutive matches when the Frenchman took charge of Celtic FC. It was the worst run since Jock Stein was Manager in 1978. Soon after, Nancy got the sack. The reasoning is that, unlike MLS where you can be as shite as you like with no consequences, there are actual consequences (relegation, loss of TV money, etc.) for poor play in leagues with promotion and relegation. You can guarantee though that Brian Schmetzer’s place as Manager for the Sounders FC is safe as houses. Make it make sense.

Also Arriola left early due to injury at Portland. Nouhou also looked a bit limpy at one point in the Portland match though he saw the match through to the end. Likely because we don’t really have any cover at left-back. Here’s my best guess.
